In the second half of this year, Ford will introduce the 2014 Transit van to the American market, thereby replacing the aging E-Series model. It is basically the full-size van that Ford has been offering in the European and Asian markets for many years. Despite a recent make-over in these markets, Ford made further adjustments and refinements to this version of the Transit van, to account for the different uses and expectations of the American consumer.
In addition to the currently available wheelbases and lengths in the Econoline models, the Transit will offer a selection different heights, lower weight but increased payloads and reduced fuel consumption and maintenance costs. Of course, that will probably be offset by higher suggested retail prices, which are, as of this moment, not yet released. Exterior Van buyers are offered the ultimate choice of three lengths in addition to three roof heights.
The 2014 Transit features a low roof ( 56”int. ), a medium roof ( 72”int. ) and a high roof ( 82”int. ), while supporting a 130 inch or 148 inch wheelbase and single- or dual rear wheels. Its rear cargo doors swing open up to 270 degrees and give complete access to the van. Advertisement Interior The extended roof lines have led to improved interior heights, with heights that start with 56 inches for the low roof, 72 inches for the medium roof and 81 inches for the high roof model. With the latter one easily accommodating a full-size person.
Engine Choices The 6-speed automatic transmission and rear-wheel drive are implemented with your choice of the following engines. A standard 3.7-liter V6 engine. The optional 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 that currently can be found in the Ford F-150. A good choice for towing in combination with the trailer towing package. The new 3.2-liter five-cylinder Power Stroke Diesel option. My experience with the European Transit Van tells me that this will be a solid replacement for the aging E-series. With emphasis on efficiency and lowering maintenance cost.
The 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 is probably the best engine of the three available. Ford is still contemplating whether to offer a four-wheel drive option, which would be a great addition for some of us. Overall quality will be better than the Sprinter and most certainly than the Ram Pro Master (a.k.a. Fiat Ducato) which will be introduced around the same time. This article leaves out the alternative fuel option. A propane/natural gas version will also be an option with the 3.7 V-6. With propane auto gas selling for $2.35 a gallon in my area I have been waiting for a V-6 propane powered van for a while.
I won’t even give gasoline or diesel a 2nd. Gasoline and diesel are now officially obsolete.
Clean, domestically produced, plentiful, affordable propane is the only way to go. Even the long haul truckers can’t replace their diesel’s with natural gas fast enough. The only people buying the gas or diesel van will be the buyers that are unaware of the propane option.
You are right about the propane/natural gas option for the upcoming Ford Transit van and I fully agree with the clean and affordable nature of propane/natural gas. However, there are a number of issues, which may make it a less desirable option. In my opinion, the main obstacle still is accessibility of the fuel. Unlike European countries, the United States has no real propane/gas infrastructure for automobiles. That may not be a problem where you live locally, but with an RV or a cargo van transformed into an RV, you might find yourself stuck in the boondocks.
This may all change with the flood of domestic natural gas coming in the next couple of years. Another issue is the price difference. On one side is the difference between natural gas and propane in addition to regional price variations. Then there is a reduced mileage for a gallon of propane in comparison to regular gasoline. On top of that is the additional cost for the conversion kit, making a good price comparison quite tricky. As the vehicle will be equipped with the standard factory gasoline fuel system, the additional CNG/Propane fuel tanks will reduce available space inside the vehicle, which may be the biggest negative factor in any small RV conversion project.
You make very valid points. All of which I have already taken into consideration. 1 point you are not quite right on is the fueling stations for propane auto gas. True there is not as many as gasoline stations.
However, there are 1000’s of propane stations, not natural gas. Look at a map of propane fueling stations and you will see. No problem for propane. Big problem for natural gas. Especially liquified natural gas. My state just got its first one!
Also with propane it qualifies as an alternative fuel so I will receive tax breaks plus fuel savings as long as propane doesn’t go up dramatically and gasoline comes down. My van will be used for business so I also will get an image boost when my customers see I am being “green”. Also, I think, but not sure yet, maybe you know, the alternative fuel version can run on gasoline OR propane. Since it comes with the standard gas fuel system.
70% of propane comes from natural gas so with the fracking boom taking place and natural gas production skyrocketing there should be plenty of excess propane to keep the price much lower than gasoline. I hope of course.
That is the only concern I have is if the price of propane goes up dramatically. I have to somewhat disagree about the availability of propane. Although nationally, there is no shortage of fueling stations, locally they can be far apart and out-of-the-way. As propane might be a good choice if you drive mostly local, it may be more difficult while traveling from coast to coast. In my current location the nearest station is about 10 miles away with prices substantially higher than regular gasoline. Average prices for natural gas are way more attractive, but as you said, fueling stations are far in between.
That may change with the current glut in natural gas. All this can be made easier with a bi-fuel system, where you can switch back to gas, but that has its drawbacks too. First, you have to keep using both fuels periodically as a matter of maintenance and secondly, it is a more expensive install.
After factory installation, by OEM installers makes the whole process inefficient and quite expensive, with an additional equipment cost of typically about $6,000 to $10,000 over the conventional vehicle base price. This makes it attractive primarily for fleet owners with high mileage use.
This propane van by ford will not be able to fill up at a hardware store or your local KOA campground because it takes a special fueling nozzle for “Propane Auto Gas”. Fancy name, but it means the highway tax is included for highway vehicles. And in fact it is against the law for the campground or hardware store or even a gasoline station that sells propane on the side to fill a propane tank that will be used for highway use. Search propane auto gas fill stations and you will see a USA map with just over 2500 stations.
Sure, in areas where there is not many people the filling stations are spaced out. For me the I-5 corridor is where I will be 99% of the time and the stations are plentiful. The U-Haul centers usually carry propane auto gas. Roush Clean Tech tells me the MSRP for the propane fuel system is around $11,000, including installation + shipping.
You will have 2 bills from the dealer. The invoice for the price of the van. The dealer then purchases the propane fuel system and installation from a Roush Clean Tech authorized distributor. Then they charge you retail price for the system. So in the end you have 2 bills. Roush Clean Tech named Knapheide and National Fleet Services as 2 authorized distributors. So Roush Clean Tech does the engineering of the system but not the installation.
I agree it is a little pricey. It will be interesting what the dealer will try to charge me. I won’t be in the mood to pay list price AFTER buying a new vehicle from them. Still worth it. You will save $17,000 in fuel costs over the life of the van. Considered to be 150,000 miles. My 2000 E-150 has 170,000 on it and is still going strong.
Just took a trip to Reno, Nevada over the weekend in my E-150. Gasoline in Reno was $3.90 for Reg. There is 5 propane filling stations in Reno.
I called them all to get a price on propane. Varied from $2.90 to $3.29 per gallon, tax included. U-haul seems to always be the highest. My home in the Rogue Valley, Oregon, the price for gasoline is $3.50, at Costco, the cheapest in town. Down the road 1 mile is a propane filling station, $2.50, tax included. I cant wait to be driving my Ford Propane Transit!
Since my last post I have found another alternative to Roush Clean Tech for converting my van to burn propane. AJ Automotive Group, Inc., makes a system they refer to as an “upgrade”.
No modifications are made to the stock factory controls for emissions or engine control. Nothing is removed. No splicing into factory wires. 100% add on system. When complete my van will run on gasoline just like stock OR propane. About half the cost of the Roush System which is propane ONLY when done, they even remove the stock gas tank.
The system can even be removed if I ever decide to sell the van and install it on another vehicle, not possible with a Roush system. You can go to driveonpropane dot com for more info. A few weeks ago Ford hired 1000 new employees to begin training to work on the assembly line to build the new Transit cargo van. The word is they will be rolling off the assembly line in the 2nd. Quarter of the year. The wait is almost over! Download The RV Electrical System Sizing Spreadsheet Sizing solar always starts with establishing demand.

This van has only 95k original miles. Absolutely ZERO RUST!!! The van looks looks like it just rolled of the show room floor in 1978 say for a few rock ships, minor nicks ect. Both the first and second owners were meticulous when it came to the maintenance and general care and preservation of the van. Garaged since new, no really, garaged since new. One key fits all locks. Stored for many years.
Runs, drives, perfect. One of the best, if not the best original Rivieras in the country. Way to much to list. 1967 Double factory door camper. 4 year restoration.
Only 80k absolutely original miles. I bought this van from the second owner here in the Pacific North West. This bus was originally delivered to Hawaii. The low original mileage is due to the van being on a small island for many years. The van has its factory M Code plate which verifies the factory options and delivery destination. This is a factory ordered double door camper (I have documentation). Most campers ordered in the states went to Sundial, Riviera, EZ Camper for there camping conversion.
Any camper delivered to Hawaii was installed by the VW dealership making this a super rare bus with its rare options. The camper kit was factory dealer installed at the VW dealership it was purchased at new in Hawaii.
The bus had minimal rust due to being garaged most of its life and being ordered with undercoating which is still in excellent condition. All metal work was professionally done using correct replacement panels. This bus has been fully restored. New 1641 engine. New free way flyer transmission, IRS (no reduction boxes), dual carbs. This bus was stripped down to a bare shell, media blasted inside and out and professionally repainted inside and out including the engine bay using factory early VW bus colors of Sand Green and Palm Green correct single stage paint.
Over 80 hours into the restored camping windows alone. 17 inch Escra Raider wheels. The one of a kind interior took me a year working on it off and on to complete.
I used the same factory interior panels and colors as would be found in a 64 deluxe. All interior and exterior colors are factory VW paint codes and reproduction interior upholstery finishes. There is less than 750 miles on the complete restoration. Transmission- Under 750 miles on rebuilt big nut freeway flyer transmission. (for those of you who don't know, a freeway flyer is a transmission geared higher) These transmissions are a great improvement over stock transmissions and allow you to cruise at highway speeds with ease and comfort.
The IRS coupled with the freeway flyer transmission and higher horse power motor gives you a bus that drives and handles more like a car. The IRS was professionally installed, (The reduction boxes have been removed).
New axles and shift bushing. The transmission shifts crisp and precise. Paint & Body- This bus was completely disassembled and stripped down to a bare shell. The entire bus was media blasted to bare metal in side and out including the engine bay. The bus had dealer installed under coating, so the under carriage and belly pans were in excellent condition and needed no rust repair. The rust repair includes, lower 3 inches of nose, all four cargo door inner and outer lower section, both left and right lower rockers, front floor corners, battery tray on right side.

All metal work was done using the finest metal replacement panels and professionally installed by a well know body shop. This bus is completely 100% RUST FREE. The under carriage is spotless.
The bus was painted using factory paint colors of Sand Green (L-311), and Palm Green (L-312), these are factory 1955 to 1958 VW bus colors. The paint is over 3 years old and shows no blemishes coming through the paint. The bus was painted using the correct single stage PPG paint finish. A lot of thought and detail went into picking the interior and exterior colors paying tribute to factory correct 1955 to 1964 finishes. The bus was painted completely inside and out including but not limited to the engine bay. The paint looks absolutely gorgeous. The panels are arrow strait and have little to no filler.
High end Safari front windows, the frames were completely disassembled and painted the body color. The Hehr windows were completely disassembled, rebuilt and fully polished. The Hehr windows have over 80 hours invested in them alone in polishing and rebuilding them.
Both front and rear bumpers are perfect with no dings or previous damage. Both bumpers were completely disassembled and repainted. The factory under coating is still in excellent condition. All new door and window rubber seals through out ect. All new lenses.
Dash is uncut and in perfection condition. DYNA Mat was used through out the entire bus including the entire roof, behind all door panels, floor and engine bay area and doubled up in certain areas. Creative Engineering Safari windows. New door handles, locks, ect. The paint has never been polished and only washed a hand full of times. Hundreds of hours went into the paint and body work alone. Interior- A lot of time and thought went into the interior design.
My goal was to keep all interior colors and finishes correct using interior color and finishes from 1964 options. All interior door panels were ordered from TMI. The colors I picked are factory 1964 colors ordered with standard and deluxe buses. The interior option code is 292 (Basalt Grey and Silver Beige). I chose not install deluxe chrome interior trim as I thought the minimalist look was the way to go and fit my design concept better.
All seats, jump seat, and Z bed were completely disassembled. The front seat frames were sand blasted and repainted. All seats were reupholstered by a high end hot rod shop, done to the highest standards. Note, these are not the cheap TMI seat covers, these are custom made by a professional upholstery shop. All vinyl was ordered from TMI to ensure colors are factory correct for 1964.
The rear Z-bed springs were replaced with a memory foam padding. All seats have custom memory foam type padding, not the cheap and uncomfortable TMI coconut fiber padding. The goal was to make the seats comfortable to drive on long road trips.
The complete headliner and lower half of the interior panels were custom made out of Baltic Birch wood. All panels were carefully hand picked for the desired grain and color. All interior Birch wood was professional cut out using factory templates. Every panel and trim piece received 5 coats of clear varnish. The panels were completely wet sanded in between coats. Needless to say this took an untold amount of hours. A lot of planning went into installing the headliner making sure no screws were visible.
All interior lights and electrical work perfect. New front mat, and wheel well cover mats.
All cabinets are original to the bus when ordered new and have the correct 1967 date codes stamped on the ID tag. I used a high end birch wood flooring throughout the cargo area.
All cabinets were reinforced with metal brackets to ensure they last another 40 years. All interior cabinets are lined with carpet. All interior brackets, interior hardware, Z bed brackets ect were sand blasted and repainted. All inside window trim was custom fitted. Plenty of storage under jump seat, z bed, closets ect.
I went out of my way to try to hide mounting screws on interior trim and panels, this attention to detail is what sets this van apart from other restorations. I have over $7,000 invested in the interior alone. There is much more work that I did to the interior, I tried to list all the high lights.
Other- 1967 was the first year of 12 volt. Brand new Escra Raider 17 inch wheels, brand new tires. The rear tires are slightly bigger and wider than the fronts to give the van a aggressive stance. Optima battery.
Vw Transporter Ply Lining Templates For Invoices Form
Rare VW Rack completely sand blasted and repainted to body color. The rack is worth a $1000 alone. Pivoting safari wiper hinges. The bus has its original M-Code plate. New reproduction seat belts up front.
Rebuilt and restored gas tank with new sending unit. Over $500 in Dyna mat sound deadening was used through out the entire bus shell. Rare set of factory tools and jack. My design concept was based on a 'what VW should have built concept'. My goal was to build a 'greatest hits vw bus' using popular interior and exterior colors, finishes and materials staying true to factory original look and details specific to the era. The drive train was upgraded for reliability, drivibility, comfort, and safety. Only factory correct VW finishes and parts were used during the restoration.
The attention to detail is what sets this van apart from other restorations. No expense or untold hours of labor were spared in this one of a kind build. This 4 year restoration was a labor of love. More rare than a 23 or 21 window and much more usable.
This van can be used, and was purpose built to tour the country in comfort and style. I have only taken the van to a couple non VW shows and it took home 1rst in its class both times. I originally built this van to keep.
Only selling to purchase another collector car. One of the finest restored split window buses in the country. This would be the perfect center piece in any VW collection.
Although I tried to be thorough in the description, I know there is much I left out. Feel free to call with any questions. RARE- 1964 Mouse Grey, Standard Micro Bus Walk Through w/ 100% OG Paint. No Really this Bus has 100% OG paint. Never restored, resprayed or touched up in any way.
Professionally installed IRS, (no reduction boxes), narrowed front beam by Wagens West. The interior is OG including headliner, all interior panels and Saphire 1 radio. The headliner is almost perfect. The seats upholstery is the only thing that has been redone recently. Rebuilt 1600cc dual port, freeway flyer transmission. Safari windows, factory 6 pop out windows. The narrowed front beam was built by a well known local VW shop (Wagens West).
The bus rides and handles awesome with the narrowed front beam and is a HUGE improvement over the stock suspension. I have never seen a split window van that has 100% og paint in this kind of original condition. Thousands of dollars and hundreds of man hours went into the preservation of this bus.
Mint condition, show quality fully restored 1979 Riviera. Less than 5000 miles on rebuilt 2 fuel injected hydraulic valve motor and transmission by local VW shop here in Portland Oregon. I have paper work on the rebuild. Mint interior, all seats have been reupholstered. Full show quality high end window out, door off paint job on rust free body.
All new door and window seals. Only 152k original miles. The van has only been driven sparingly since the restoration. The van has always been garaged. Absolutely ZERO RUST!!!

Custom made awning cost over $1500 is included. Stored for many years prior to restoration. Runs, drives, perfect. One of the best, if not the best Riviera's in the country. The pictures speak for them selves.
Restored 1976 Tin Top Riviera. Only 55k Original miles. Less than 200 miles on the restoration. This is a super rare late model bay window full camper with pop top delete, (tin top camper). The early tin tops are pretty common with there weekender style interior set ups, but to find a later model bay widow with full camping interior is rare.
